What Is a Blue Slip Inspection?
A blue slip is officially called an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme report, or AUVIS report.
It confirms that an unregistered vehicle meets applicable safety, design and identity requirements before it can be registered in NSW. The inspection must be performed by a provider accredited by Transport for NSW to conduct AUVIS inspections.
When Do You Need a Blue Slip?
You may require a blue slip when your vehicle:
- Has been unregistered for more than three months
- Was brought to NSW from another state or territory
- Was imported from overseas
- Has no number plates
- Has significant changes, such as a replacement engine
- Requires a defect notice to be cleared
- Was previously written off and has been approved for re-registration
Transport for NSW may require additional inspections or documents for modified, imported, written-off or high-risk vehicles.
What Does a Blue Slip Check?
A blue slip inspection is more detailed than a standard pink slip inspection.
The examiner checks areas including:
- Vehicle identification details
- Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN
- Engine and chassis details
- Registration and vehicle records
- Brakes, tyres and wheels
- Steering and suspension
- Lights and electrical safety items
- Windscreen, wipers and washers
- Seatbelts and safety equipment
- Vehicle body and structural condition
- Exhaust system and fluid leaks
- Modifications and applicable compliance requirements
The exact checks depend on the vehicle type, history and any modifications. AUVIS inspections assess the vehicle’s identity, design compliance and safety.
Blue Slip Inspection Fees
The NSW maximum inspection fees effective from 1 July 2026 are:

These fees include GST. Additional repair, diagnostic, towing or specialist certification costs are not included.
What Should You Bring?
Please bring any documents that may help confirm the vehicle’s identity, ownership and compliance, including:
- Previous registration papers
- Proof of purchase or ownership
- Interstate registration documents
- Import approval documents, where applicable
- Engineering or modification certificates
- Receipts for a replacement engine or major components
- Defect notice paperwork, if applicable

How the Blue Slip Process Works
1. Contact Mechy
Provide the vehicle type, registration or VIN, registration status and the reason you require a blue slip.
2. Confirm Eligibility
We confirm whether we are authorised to inspect your vehicle category and advise which documents you should bring.
3. Attend the Inspection
Bring the vehicle to our approved inspection location at the confirmed appointment time.
4. Complete Any Required Repairs
If the vehicle does not pass, the examiner will explain the relevant defects or documentation issues.
5. Register the Vehicle
After the vehicle passes, take the required documents to Service NSW to complete the registration process.
In most cases, the inspection result is submitted electronically. However, Service NSW advises customers to bring the original hard-copy blue slip when registering the vehicle. A blue slip is generally valid for 42 days
Registering an Interstate Vehicle in NSW
Vehicles brought into NSW from another state or territory normally require a blue slip before NSW registration can be completed.
Depending on your circumstances, Service NSW may require:
- A completed registration application
- Proof of identity
- Proof of registration entitlement
- The original blue slip issued within the previous 42 days
- Interstate number plates
- Compulsory Third Party insurance
- Modification certificates, where applicable
- Registration fees and applicable taxes
The exact requirements depend on the vehicle and registration circumstances.
Can I Drive an Unregistered Vehicle to the Inspection?
NSW rules may allow an unregistered vehicle to be driven directly to an authorised inspection station when the trip is genuinely connected to obtaining registration.
You must take the most direct or convenient route. Make an appointment before travelling and keep evidence of the booking with you. A vehicle must not be driven when a direction has been issued stating that it cannot be driven until repairs are completed.
Contact Service NSW or apply for an unregistered vehicle permit when you are uncertain whether your journey is permitted.
